Port Pirie Lateral Pipeline Assessment Complete

Epic Energy are pleased to advise that the assessment of the Port Pirie Lateral Pipeline has been completed as scheduled.

The final data was captured on the 26th of January and as a result, Epic Energy can resume pipeline operations.

Next steps

  • The pipeline will need to be cleaned to prepare for gas flows to re-commence
  • The cleaning process will involve several days of flaring gas, expected to commence on the 27th of January
  • During this time, a flame of 8-12m high may be visible from the temporary flaring stack at Bungama
  • Flaring is commonly used in the energy industry and is environmentally preferred because it releases 90% fewer carbon emissions than venting the gas directly into the atmosphere
  • Flaring will occur under strict safety controls and a permit provided by the SA Country Fire Service
  • Once complete, the pipeline will resume delivering gas to the towns of Port Pirie and Whyalla.
  • There will be no disruption to residential customers in Port Pirie and Whyalla during the transition back to regular gas supply.

Epic Energy will then review the data captured during the assessment to inform the pipeline’s maintenance program and ongoing operations.

We thank our customers, landowners and stakeholders for their support during these important works.
