Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline

The proposed Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline is a storage and transmission hydrogen pipeline capable of storing 100 tonnes of hydrogen.

Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline_feature2

The Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline forms part of the South Australian Government’s Hydrogen Jobs Plan (HJP) under which the SA Government has committed to building a large-scale hydrogen production facility and power station in Whyalla, anticipated to be operational in early 2026.

As part of the HJP, Epic Energy has entered into an agreement with the Office of Hydrogen Power South Australia to progress the engineering and approvals processes for the Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline.

The key components of the Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline are:

  • A compressor station and inlet facility at the HJP Whyalla Hydrogen Facility to compress the hydrogen for injection into the pipeline.
  • A buried pipeline, designed to store and transport hydrogen, estimated to be 45km long and 900mm nominal diameter.
  • An end of line valve station at, or near, Fitzgerald Bay Road Port Bonython.

Community Consultation

We recognise the importance of early and transparent consultation with the community and stakeholders. Feedback is important to us and will be taken into consideration in the final design and location of the Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline.

This consultation is underway and will be ongoing throughout the construction and operation of the Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline. However, please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly.

Epic Energy recognises the traditional owners of the land on which the Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline project will take place, the Barngarla people. Epic Energy pays its respects to their Elders past and present and respects the Barngarla people’s spiritual and cultural connection to Country.

Epic Energy has drafted an Environmental Impact Report and Statement of Environmental Objectives to support its application for a pipeline licence under the Energy Resources Act 2000 (ER Act) covering the proposed construction and operation of the Whyalla Hydrogen Pipeline. These documents are being made publicly available for comment until 24 December 2024 and can be accessed here. Epic welcomes any comments or feedback on these documents.  Comments and feedback can be sent by email to by no later than 24 December 2024.  Following this comment period, Epic Energy will finalise and formally submit the documents to the Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) under the ER Act.
