About Mannum BESS
The BESS will store excess renewable energy to supply to the electricity grid during peak demand periods, to support consistency of renewable energy supply. This means a cleaner, more reliable power grid for South Australians.
The BESS can send 100 megawatts of power into the electricity grid for up to two hours – enough to power about 16,000 South Australian homes each day.

How Does Battery Energy Storage Work?
During the day, when the sun is shining, there is often more energy in the electricity grid than is needed.
The BESS will store this extra energy and then send it back into the grid at other times when a lot of energy is needed, like in the evenings.

Where will it be?
The BESS will be built on 2 hectares of privately owned land, next to the existing ElectraNet/SA Power Networks substation on Mannum Road.
What will it look like?
The BESS is made up of 80 shipping containers that house the batteries. Each container is approximately 2.4 metres tall. The existing roadside vegetation will be preserved, with additional plantings and landscaping planned as part of the project.
When is it happening?
Construction is expected to begin in June 2024 and completed in early 2025. The battery will then undergo testing and commissioning in early 2025. Full operation is expected to begin in September 2025.
Who is building it?
Epic Energy has contracted e-STORAGE to provide the BESS components. Construction will be done by Adelaide-based specialist Consolidated Power Projects. ElectraNet will also be expanding the existing substation to create the new grid connection point for the BESS.
Will I be impacted by construction?
We are working to keep disruption to a minimum. For safety, speed limits may be lowered on Mannum Road at certain times during construction and equipment delivery.
Will it create jobs?
During construction of the BESS, we expect around 20-30 direct and over 100 indirect jobs will be created. After that, a small team from Epic Energy will be in charge of inspections and maintenance.
